Overview of the Marangu route

The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and one of the most popular trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Choosing the Marangu Route means retracing the path of Hans Meyer’s first successful ascent in 1889. The route passes entirely within Kilimanjaro National Park, showcasing diverse landscapes from lush tropical forest to alpine desert. It’s the only route featuring dormitory-style huts for overnight accommodation.

Planning to climb with Again Expeditions? The Marangu Route is ideal during the rainy seasons — mid-March to late May and late October to December — as the huts provide comfort and protection from the rain. This route is offered in both 5-day and 6-day options, with the 6-day itinerary allowing better acclimatization and an easier climb.

Expert recommendation

The Marangu Route provides beautiful views of Kilimanjaro’s southern slopes. However, since the same trail is used for both ascending and descending, the scenery can feel repetitive and the route often becomes busy. While the 5-day option may seem appealing, it poses challenges due to limited time for acclimatization. For a more comfortable experience, beginners are encouraged to choose the 6-day version or explore longer itineraries of 7 days or more with Again Expeditions for better adaptation and a higher chance of reaching the summit.

Lemosho Route Detailed Itinerary

Day 1; Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be welcomed by a Again Expeditions representative and transferred to your hotel as per the package rate. The hotel offers everything needed for a relaxing stay — comfortable rooms, hot showers, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and reliable internet access. In the evening, you’ll attend a briefing with our team to discuss the climb and ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead.

Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for your group. Additional charges apply for separate individual transfers, so we recommend coordinating arrival and departure times within your group.

Please Note: Check-in begins at 2:00 PM.

Day 2; Trekking from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

In the morning, your Again Expeditions mountain guide and support team will meet you at the hotel for a short briefing before departing by vehicle to the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park — Marangu Gate (1,860m / 6,102ft). After completing registration and obtaining climbing permits, your trek to Mandara Hut (2,720m / 8,922ft) begins. The trail winds through lush rainforest, where rain is common, so carrying a raincoat and spare clothing is highly advised. Upon arrival at camp, the support crew will handle all preparations and serve a freshly cooked lunch.

Along the Marangu Route, all overnight stays are in designated mountain huts — a comfortable option for climbers who prefer not to camp in tents.

Please Note:
This will be your first day at high altitude, so it’s important to follow these guidelines:

  • Drink at least 4 liters of bottled water throughout the day, taking small sips frequently.

  • To reduce the risk of altitude sickness, consider using prescribed high-altitude medication. Many trekkers take it in the morning before climbing. Please consult your doctor in advance for advice and to check for any allergies or health concerns.

  • At night, you may experience mild symptoms such as headache or nausea due to reduced oxygen levels. Inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell — our team is trained to assist with altitude-related discomfort.

Day 3; Trekking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After an early and hearty breakfast, the Again Expeditions team will set out from Mandara Hut toward the next camp — Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,202ft). This section of the trek offers breathtaking scenery, and upon arrival, you’ll enjoy stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

After lunch and a short rest, you’ll take an acclimatization hike toward Kibo Hut, gaining about 200 meters (656 ft) in altitude before returning to Horombo Hut for dinner and an overnight stay.

Please Note:
The acclimatization hike is a light but crucial walk designed to help your body adjust to the higher altitude. Taking it seriously greatly improves your chances of a successful summit and minimizes the risk of altitude sickness.

Day 4; Trekking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

After breakfast, the Again Expeditions team will begin the trek toward Kibo Hut (4,720m / 15,482ft). The trail is not overly demanding, but it’s important to maintain a steady, manageable pace to conserve energy for the upcoming summit attempt. Upon reaching camp, you’ll enjoy a warm lunch and have the rest of the day to relax. It’s recommended to rest as much as possible, avoid any strenuous activity, and drink plenty of water to stay well-hydrated before the climb to the peak of Kilimanjaro.

Day 5; Trekking to Uhuru Peak and descent to Horombo Hut

Your Again Expeditions team will begin the summit climb at night, departing from Kibo Hut (4,720m / 15,482ft) toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,336ft) — the highest point in Africa. While the trail itself is not technically difficult, the high altitude makes this section physically demanding. Each pair of climbers will be accompanied by a dedicated guide who will carefully monitor your pace, energy levels, and overall well-being throughout the ascent.

After reaching Uhuru Peak and celebrating your incredible achievement, you may choose to briefly visit a nearby glacier before descending back to Kibo Hut for a well-deserved two-hour rest. The journey then continues down to Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,202ft) for the night.

Please Note:
Be extra cautious during the descent — most climbing-related injuries happen on the way down. Watch your step carefully, as the steep terrain increases the risk of slipping or injuring your feet and toenails.

Day 6; Descent from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

You will be offered a warm breakfast in the morning, after which we will head for the Kilimanjaro National Park’s exit: Marangu Gate (1,970 m /6,462 f). After your descent, the whole group will gather to congratulate you, and then you will have the chance to share your opinions on the trip in the guestbook. Lastly, we will present you with your commemorative certificates and provide you with a transfer back to the hotel.

Day 7; Departure

Rest in the hotel and transfer to the airport.

PLEASE NOTE: Hotel check-out is at 11:00 AM. In case you need a late check-out because of an evening flight, there is the option to extend your hotel stay for an extra fee.
